If you live in one of the major cities of India, you'll know that most office-goers have a tough time commuting between office and home. Either you get squeezed in public transport or the pain of driving through the traffic wants you to leave the car home and hop into a cab. But here is what Microsoft seems to have done for their employees in China. A special bus which ferries them.

The US Army is looking to the future and its researchers are trying to build solar-powered winged vehicles for combat and surveillance. The new combat aircrafts will destroy the enemy target without any damage to the environment (if that's possible) and they will also prevent the army from destroying friendly or non-hostile targets.

The solar-powered aircrafts are called Swarming Micro Air Vehicles, or SMAV, and they will create a network which leads to SMAVNET Project at the Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne, Switzerland. SMAVNET stands for Swarming Micro Air Vehicle Networks for Communication Relay, and the Micro Autonomous Science and Technology Center will test this technique...

Brunton makes a good range of flexible solar cells that use CIGS (Copper Indium Gallium diSelenide) instead of the usual silicon. The Brunton Solaris 26 is a flexible solar charger that generates 26 watts but measures only 21.5" by 37.5″ and folds down to 11″ by 8.5" by 1".

Solaris chargers can charge a laptop or digital video camera. They can power a satellite or cell phone. It takes between 1 and 2 hours to charge a small device using the solar cells. It takes between 4 and 8 hours to fully charge a laptop computer. Brunton's chargers operate well in low-light conditions such as overcast days. A reviewer says:

When researching energy efficient appliances, we often turn to the recommendations of the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE). The ACEEE continues to publish helpful information about all sorts of appliances, including freezers. The ninth edition of their Consumer Guide to Home Energy Savings, published in fall 2007, contains helpful information about selecting a freezer.

windturbinepickens.jpg

Texas oilman T. Boone Pickens has placed an the largest ever order for wind turbines: he ordered 667 wind turbines from GE, each costing $3 million dollars, making the total order $2 billion. Pickens plans to develop the world's largest wind farm in the panhandle of Texas.

The $2 billion order is just one quarter of the total amount he plans to purchase. Once built, the wind farm would have the capacity to supply power to over 1,200,000 homes in North Texas. Each turbine will produce 1.5 megawatts of electricity.

New Glass.JPG Although windows can naturally heat buildings in the cold seasons, during the summer they can easily overheat a building. To help with this problem, Japanese scientists at AIST recently developed a thin film which can make transparent glass turn into mirrors. The use of such a window in buildings or automobiles could reduce the energy consumed by air conditioners by more than 30%. The scientists, Kazuki Yoshimura and Shanhu Bao developed the thin film material. Previous research works have focused on the use of thin films made of magnesium-nickel alloy that behave as switchable mirrors: these, however, all have a yellow tinge in their transparent state.

Safety question:  what is the dangerous practice in this picture?
