Around the world: November 2007 Archives

libya.jpgIn North Africa and the Arabian Peninsula there are deserts where very rain falls. In this region temperatures even in the shade rise to more than 40°C and some times in can go as high as 50°C. The sand and stones in direct sunlight are hot enough to burn you if you touch them. In such areas ; the humidity is low, so perspiration evaporates rapidly.

Can the temperature ever exceed 60°C (136 F)?

Yes it already has, in Al' Aziziyah on 13 September 1922. it was recorded 57.7°C (135.9°F).

Where is Al 'Aziziyah?

In Libya , which is acountry in North Africa.

So is it the hottest Place on Earth ?

The temperature in Al Aziziyah was certainly extremely hot, but since there were few meteorological stations nearby, it's highly improbable that this particular point was indeed the hottest spot on Earth.
